Here and There

“Here” and “There” are two useful words in any language. We use them to refer to whereabouts of something.

Maybe you wonder: What are their meanings in Arabic? Here they are:

Here	هنا
There	هناك

When “Here” or “There” come before the subject, we pronounce them like this:

English	Arabic	Pronunciation
Here I am	انا هو
Here it/he is	اهو / اهو هنا
Here it/she is	اهى / اهى هنا
Here they are	اهم / اهم هنا
There it/he is	اهو هناك
There it/she is	اهى هناك
There they are	اهم هناك

Now, let’s study them when they come after the verb “Be” in present tense:

I am here	انا هنا
It/He is there	هو هناك
It/She is here	هى هنا
You are there (SM)	انت هناك
You are here (SF)	انتى هنا
You are there (P)	انتوا هناك
We are here	احنا هنا
They are there	هم هناك

There is a special meaning for “There” when it comes before verb “Be”. Now, we will study it in present tense:

There are…	فى ...

Let’s take some examples:

There is a pen there	فى قلم هناك
There are pens here	فى قلامة هنا
There is a girl there	فى بنت هناك
There are girls here	فى بنات هنا
There is a car in the street	فى عربية فى الشارع
There are chairs in the room	فى كراسى فى الأوضة

Remember: The preposition “In” is “فى” in Arabic. And in normal speech, we often shorten and pronounce it like letter “ف”.

When they come after any other verb, there meanings are “هنا” and “هناك”. Like this:

Come here (SF)	تعالى هنا
Go there (SM)	روح هناك
He is sitting there	هو قاعد هناك
I always eat here	انا دايما باكل هنا
